Background of the study
In Sokoto North LGA, traditional methods of recording school attendance have long been fraught with inaccuracies, inefficiencies, and delays. With the advent of IoT technology, the design and implementation of smart digital attendance systems have emerged as viable solutions to streamline educational administration and enhance accountability. IoT-based digital attendance systems incorporate biometric sensors, RFID technology, and cloud-based data storage, enabling real-time tracking of student presence and movement within school premises (Abdullahi, 2023). Such systems not only reduce manual errors but also provide instant data that can be utilized to monitor student engagement and improve overall institutional efficiency (Usman, 2024).
The transition from manual to digital attendance recording is driven by the need for increased transparency and efficient management of academic records. In the context of Sokoto North, where schools face challenges related to resource limitations and administrative bottlenecks, smart attendance systems offer a transformative approach that aligns with modern educational practices. The integration of IoT devices facilitates seamless data collection and processing, which can be further analyzed to identify trends in student attendance and punctuality. Moreover, these systems contribute to reducing absenteeism by enabling early detection of irregular attendance patterns, thereby allowing timely interventions by educators and administrators (Abdullahi, 2023). This evolution in attendance management is consistent with global trends in educational technology, where digital solutions are increasingly adopted to support teaching and learning processes. However, the successful implementation of such systems necessitates overcoming challenges related to technical infrastructure, user training, and data security (Usman, 2024). This study aims to explore the design, implementation, and operational challenges of IoT-based smart digital school attendance systems in Sokoto North LGA, with a focus on enhancing accuracy, efficiency, and accountability in educational institutions (Abdullahi, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Traditional manual attendance systems in Sokoto North LGA are often plagued by inaccuracies, fraudulent entries, and significant delays in record processing. These inefficiencies compromise the reliability of attendance data, which in turn affects academic planning, student performance monitoring, and overall school management. The manual process is labor-intensive and susceptible to errors, making it challenging for administrators to obtain accurate and real-time attendance statistics (Usman, 2024). The absence of an integrated digital system further exacerbates the situation, leading to discrepancies in student records and hampering timely decision-making. Additionally, issues related to low technological literacy among school staff and limited infrastructural support create substantial barriers to the adoption of IoT-based attendance systems (Abdullahi, 2023). Moreover, concerns regarding data security and privacy further impede the transition towards digital solutions. These problems necessitate a comprehensive investigation into the design and implementation of smart attendance systems that can overcome the inherent challenges of traditional methods. This study seeks to assess the operational shortcomings of existing attendance practices and evaluate the potential benefits and challenges of implementing an IoT-based system in the school environment of Sokoto North LGA. By examining technical, administrative, and socio-cultural factors, the research aims to propose a robust framework that enhances data accuracy, reduces processing time, and fosters a secure digital environment for educational administration (Usman, 2024).
Objectives of the study
To design a prototype for a smart digital attendance system using IoT technology.
To assess the impact of the system on attendance accuracy and administrative efficiency.
To identify and address technical and training challenges associated with implementation.
